Choosing a Purebred Dog

"Just think what it means to have a purebred dog. It is a purebred dog for only one reason: because someone cared and supervised the birth of every single generation. For decades past, or even for hundreds of years in some breeds, someone saw that the right dog was bred to the right bitch, and reared the pups to a healthy adulthood. Think how hard it is to keep a bitch in heat from cavorting about with any cur that passes by. Do you think that she cares about the lineage of her whelps? No! Humans care! And ever since the breed was originated, humans have supervised every step to improve on the features that make every breed useful, special, and unique."
As Phyllis A. Holst so aptly describes in her book Canine Reproduction, we have a huge responsibility to keep our breed "pure, strong, and correct." Each breed has specific characteristics typical of that breed and we want to breed dogs that are of excellent quality, that meets their breed standard, have wonderful temperaments, and are in top health without hereditary defects. When you are looking for a breed to fit in with your family's lifestyle, know what you want. Do you want a large dog, small dog, guard dog, working dog, a loveable companion, one who is good with children? All of these are important questions. In this day where "designer" dogs are popular, it is still reassuring to know that you can find a dog specifically bred to suit your requirements. Our Coton de Tulear and Bolognese are carefully bred to maintain their specific breed characteristics. Bolognese are intelligent, sensitive, affectionate, and playful. They have been bred for centuries as strictly companion dogs. They are very interactive and love to greet you with their "bolo" dance. Coton de Tulears are friendly, calm, highly trainable dogs with very sweet, endearing personalities. Historically, it was law that only nobility could own a Coton de Tulear and Bolognese sat in the courts of kings and queens. Now they are accessible to you and your family as wonderful pets and loving companions.

Bolo in the Bidet!

Casper a Bolognese, lives in Florida with his his owners Ann and Bruce. They trained Casper to potty in their bidet as a young puppy. They say Casper never has accidents in the house. While we might definitely consider this the ultimate in potty training, most of us don't have bidets and so we resort to taking our puppies to the great outdoors or training them to a puppy pad. The main thing to remember when training a puppy is to be very consistent. Always take your dog to the same location, use the same command such as "Potty" or "Out" or whatever you decide and have the puppy on a leash if you are not in a fenced-in area or yard. Wherever you take them, that is where they will learn to go. If you are training to a puppy pad, keep it sufficient distance away from his crate or sleeping area and food. Puppies like to keep their sleeping area and living area clean, so keeping the puppy pad 5 or 6 feet from this area lets him know this is the place to go. Many puppy pads have a scent on them that attracts the puppy to them. When the puppy goes where he is supposed to, always praise him and/or offer him a small treat. When training him to go outside, at first you must take him out every hour or so. Stay no more than five or six minutes. When he goes, praise him lavishly, offer him a small treat and then take him back indoors. Then he will learn that going outside is the time to relieve himself, not play time, If he doesn't go, but goes when you come inside, say: "No!" firmly and take him back outside for a few minutes. Always take your puppy out after sleeping and eating, and after play periods and anytime he indicates he is looking for a place to potty... most commonly, by sniffing. Bolognese and Coton de Tulears are smart dogs and it doesn't take too long to get them trained. Be patient however, they are just babies and do not have fully developed muscle control. With consistency and patience, you will not only have a happy puppy, but you will be an even happier owner!

You Want to Dance? Bolognese and Coton de Tuelars
love to dance! They endearingly jump and walk on their hind legs. Just like the merry marionettes of a French circus, both the Bolognese and the Cotons dance, twirl, and especially the Bolognese roll their paws in the air inviting you to join in the fun! No wonder the royalty and nobles in times past were entertained by these vivacious, playful little friends! The Cotons de Tulear were nicknamed "clown dogs" because they were used as street performers and in circuses. They love to spin, dance, flip, and show off! Both Cotons and Bolognese are intelligent, eager to please, and are easily trained. Everything is a game for them and they love to play!!
Flying Home
Shipping Bolognese, Bolonka and Coton de Tulear puppies
Many times when families purchase a Coton or Bolognese puppy from us, they are concerned about the flight home. We always reassure them that the puppies arrive safely and happily. Airlines have very stringent rules about pet travel. You can log on to any of the airline carriers and view the requirements. They are put in a temperature controlled, pressurized, comfortable environment. Your pet can rest comfortably in his or her crate during the flight. Pets are put on the plane last and taken off first to assure their safety.
Airlines are very careful to make sure pets have been fed and watered and are also in a roomy crate. When we ship our puppies, we always put them on a sherpa type bed, provide a blanket, and one of their favorite toys, along with a puppy pad at the back of the crate for them to potty on. We call our customers when the puppy ships out and talk to them again when it arrives. It is nearly always the same response, "He/she came bounding out of the crate as wiggly as ever and we played with him/her all the way home!"
One thing that we always do before we ship our puppies is to acclimate them to the crate. About a week or two before we ship a puppy, we put a crate in the area where the puppy is kept. We leave the door open on the crate with a comfy bed inside. The puppy can go in and out as it pleases. They always go inside at first out of curiosity and sniff everything out. Later, they go in to rest and sleep. It's almost like a kid playing in a tent. They feel very secure and at home in their own special place. When the time comes for your puppy to fly home to you, it makes the travel much easier because the puppy is used to the crate. Our goal is to make sure your puppy arrives to you healthy, happy, and with as smooth a transition as possible into your family. These are very special puppies and we want to make buying from us as easy as possible for you and these loving babies!

Living Longer and Happier With Pets

Love to laugh? Want to be connected to life? Live healthy and long? Get a pet!
We know that pets enrich our lives and it has been proven scientifically that they improve our minds and bodies. People who own pets live longer, have less stress, and have fewer heart attacks. Studies have shown that when people even pet animals, their blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature decrease.
They keep us moving. We walk them, feed them, groom them, and love to play with them. All of these activities require action from us, even if it is just getting up to let them out a few times a day, or taking them on a leisurely walk or jog in the fresh air and sunshine.
They keep us laughing and loving. When your dog greets you or you are playing with it, your heart gets a little warmer. You know you are home when you see that wagging tail and eagerness to greet you as if they haven't seen you in months, even when though you've only been gone a few hours. Somehow it just makes us feel good. They make us laugh and we know that "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine."
They keep us connected. Sometimes children, introverted people, and elderly need help participating in life. Animals help us express love, show affection, interact, and open up. As a First Grade teacher, it has been fun to watch dogs help children express themselves. We have two dogs that come to our school regularly. Children get to take turns reading to them. Quiet little kids who are timid about reading aloud to other children, will read to the dogs, helping the child gain confidence and contributing to their emotional well being.
They keep us living. We may not live as long as Methusalah, but owning a pet will make our years happier and healthier. 94% of pet owners say their pets make them smile more than once a day. Puppy's Health and Vaccinations

We are always concerned about maintaining the highest standards to keep our dogs and puppies healthy so they can live long, high quality lives. One reason we love the Italian Bolognese and Coton de Tulear breeds is that they have no genetic defects and they have a life span of at least 15 years to be a member of a family and bring joy and friendship to our lives. Recently, another breeder informed us of a new vaccine that has made a tremendous difference in the way she vaccinates her dogs. The vaccine is called NEOPAR. NEOPAR was co-developed at the height of one of the nation's worst epidemics of Parvo by Dr. Bob Page of Dresden, Tennessee. NEOPAR is from 700% to 6500% more potent than any of the other parvo vaccines available and can be given safely at 35 and 49 days of age. The puppies are protected earlier with less strain to their immature bodies than with other parvo virus vaccines. Along with the administration of NEOPAR, there is a recommended schedule of a 2-way vaccine called NEOVAC DA2 (Distemper-Adenovirus) to be given at intervals with NEOPAR, which gives puppies the highest protection from common puppy health threats.

Italian Bolognese
"I'm looking for a little white fluffy dog." That's what one customer told us, and of course, we told him he had come to the right place. Sometimes, when people are looking for Italian Bolognese on the internet, instead of a fluffy white puppy, they get a fabulous Italian Bolognese pasta recipe. Well, we have Bolognese puppies and we love them even more than the famous Italian food!
Cindy was the first to purchase a Bolognese puppy. When we picked her up at the airport, we couldn't believe our eyes! That puppy didn't even look real. She looked like the most adorable stuffed animal you've ever seen. Now, we have a couple of males and a few females between Sarah, Cindy's daughter, Cindy, and me.
Italian Bolognese are still pretty rare in the United States and unless you have done your research, you might mistakenly think a Bichon Frise is a Bolognese. Actually, they are in the same family, but the Bolognese is smaller, square, and fine boned. They have the most wonderful, silky coat that lays in curly tendrils on its body and over its eyes. They have black button noses and dark, beautiful eyes. Bolognese are very friendly, loyal, and sweet. They love attention and love to play games. One of our males, Alfonso, is a constant source of entertainment for my husband. Every time he plays with him, Alfonso is quite clownish and turns in circles and makes sure that my husband notices every move. He is hilarious! Luigi, our other male, is extemely sweet and playful. Bolognese make you smile all the time!
